The Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of several biologically and industrially important substrates viz. purine and pyrimidine bases, pharmaceuticals, dipeptides, alcohols, catcholamines, heterocycles etc. using N-haloamines under various experimental condtions have been studied to explore the mechanistic aspects of these redox reactions. The effect of several variables such as oxidant, substrate, acid or alkali, catalyst, ionic strength, dielectric constant, solvent isotope and temperature were investigated in detail. Thermodynamic parameters associated with the oxidation studies and the efficiency of the catalyst have been reported, suitable kinetic modeling and mechanisms were deduced. These investigations are expected to amplify the scientific community in getting more potential in the subject area of physical organic chemistry in general and catalysis in particular.
3-benzylcoumarins and their derivatives with varied substitution patterns and its benzoderivatives were prepared using the wittig approach. During this work improved method of alkylation of simple phosphorane was achieved. Directed aromatic Lithiation, Vilsmeier Haack reaction and Wittig reaction etc. were routinely carried out. Spectroscopic methods (IR, UV, GC-MS, NMR) were used for characterization of compounds and experience was obtained in handling the respective instruments.
