The Department of History at Jyoti Nivas College, established in 1966, is one of the college's oldest departments. It offers a diverse range of combinations, including History with Economics and Sociology, History with Travel and Tourism, and Journalism with History and English and Sociology. The department actively organizes various seminars, conferences, and workshops at both state and national levels in collaboration with organizations such as the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), St. John's Research Institute, and the Centre for Indian Numismatic Studies (COINS), fostering a research-oriented approach among students. Additionally, short-term courses like "Gleaning India’s History Through Coins" and "Introduction to Archaeology," along with field trips, provide students with valuable hands-on experiences that complement their classroom learning.

The broad objectives of the B.A. Course in History are:
1. To provide a holistic understanding of historical events, economic activities, and sociological concepts that are beneficial for higher learning and research.
2. To equip students with the skills necessary for pursuing various career opportunities.
3. To offer insights into significant historical events and locations.
4. To introduce students to the major currents of socio-economic, political, and cultural history.
5. To familiarise students with the remarkable contributions of the people of Karnataka and its rich heritage, which are invaluable for both the present and the future.

Our college offers a vibrant and dynamic range of events and activities that enrich students' academic experience and foster a deep connection with history and culture. Regularly hosted events include photography exhibitions, pottery workshops, and numismatics exhibitions, providing hands-on learning opportunities. Field trips are organized to historical and heritage sites like Bengaluru, Hampi, Belur, Halebidu, Shravanabelagola, along with archaeological excursions to places such as Janapada Loka and the Channapattana Toy Factory. Additionally, seminars are conducted, and a college newsletter keeps the community informed about upcoming activities and academic milestones.
