Student Manual for Continuous Internal Assessment (MA English)


1. The Continuous Internal Assessment (for most papers) will be divided as follows:
Mid-Semester Exam – 20 marks
Assignment - 10 marks
Presentation - 10 marks
Activity - 05 marks
Attendance - 05 marks
Total - 50 marks

2. Students will be given an opportunity to improve their CIA marks and should meet the concerned teacher if they wish to do so.
3. Students must complete their work (assignments and presentations) in the stipulated time period / allotted date.

Mid –Semester Examinations
1. Each exam will be for 1 ½ hours.
2. The exam is for 50 marks and this will be reduced to 20 for Internal Assessment.
3. The student will have to write 2 essays for 15 marks each and 2 short essays for 10 marks each. This is the general format of the question papers, but is subject to minor variations.
4. The long essays for 15 marks will have to roughly be 800-1000 words long. Depending on the question, the student will be required to write a general answer pertaining to the area of study. Questions specific to two or more texts will require a compare and contrast format of answering. The essay should be well organized having an introduction, conclusion and must contain evidence of critical and analytical thinking.
5. The shorter essays for 10 marks will be approximately 800 words long and must also be well organized with introduction, conclusion and containing evidence of analytical and critical thinking. These questions will be text based.
6. The students are advised to manage their time well while writing the answers to ensure that they can complete the paper.
7. The instructions in the question paper have to be read carefully before beginning the exam.

Assignments
1. It must have a title.
2. The assignment must contain critical analysis of text or texts. It must be analytical and inferential in style rather than comprehension based.
3. It should be relevant to the topic or question given and should be roughly 1000-1500 words long.
4. It must be well organized having an introduction and conclusion.
5. The student must ensure that the assignment follows a compare and contrast format.
6. The assignment must be well referenced and all secondary material used must be paraphrased in the students’ words and cited.
7. It is mandatory to have a bibliography/works cited page with the assignment containing details of both the primary and secondary materials used.

Presentations
1. Student will be given 8 to 10 mints for presentation.
2. Students must meet the teacher and discuss the structure and outline in advance.
3. Primary focus to be on the given topic.
4. Must show some original thought/ ideas.
5. Secondary material should be paraphrased in student’s own words.
6. Must make a presentation and not read from paper.
7. Must be able to clarify and answer questions relating to the presentation at the end.

Students’ activities
1. Students’ activities will be evaluated on the basis of their presence and participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Activities will be organized by the English department, JNC PG Centre, from time to time.
2. Students’ presence and participation in planning, organizing and coordinating activities like seminars, conferences, workshops and summits will be recognized. Presenting papers in the seminars/conferences organized by the college or at other colleges, contributing to the college magazine, The Note Book or Research journals and completing online/MOOC courses would also form an important part of academic activities.
3. Creative thinking, expressions, behavior and active participation will be encouraged and rewarded with suitable marks.
