PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE

Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous is a minority Christian Educational Institution founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes and affiliated to the Bengaluru City University (BCU). Since its inception in 1966, the college has remained steadfast in its aim of providing quality education to young women cutting across all barriers of caste, creed, community, religion or socio-economic factors. The college aims to provide a balanced, comprehensive education by fulfilling the highest standards of intellectual excellence, code of ethical values, women empowerment, career advancement and social relevance.

The schools and colleges managed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes are inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. SJT is guided by the socio-economic and political goals enshrined in the Constitution of India.

Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous caters to liberal education that acquaints the students with various intellectual strategies needed for living in harmony with the natural and social environments. Education at JNC is also intended to develop moral and spiritual values which will prepare the students to face the different phases of life with joy and peace. Founded in an epoch of revolutionary changes in all walks of life, JNC considers quality in higher education as essential for empowering women. While preserving the essence of Indian culture, JNC prepares its students to live a fulfilling life in a world that is rapidly engulfed by science and technology.

Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous has completed 54 years of its glorious existence. For Jyoti Nivas it has been a fruitful and enriching journey. With visionary zeal, ceaseless effort, steely determination and sustained commitment, the college has made tremendous strides from its beginnings.

Our Institution, staff and students regularly win awards and recognition in the field of academics, sports, cultural, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

For the past few years, Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous has collaborated with several important national and international institutes and universities of world repute to identify potential areas in the field of education to work jointly on research, student development programmes and educational enhancement.

 

Jyoti Nivas aims to motivate and enhance research potential among staff and students and promote innovative, intellectual and creative thinking among teachers and research scholars. Every year the Research Cell of Jyoti Nivas brings out two issues of “Academic Studies: National Journal of Jyoti Research Academy” and one edition each of Students’ Research Journals - “The Researcher”, “Scientia”,“Samshodhana”."Dhii" and "Notebook".
From the time of Autonomy, the Departments of English, Kannada and Hindi have been bringing out their own textbooks. Several departments bring out their annual Newsletters to record their achievements and endeavours. The students of The Centre for Media Studies produce short films, brings out Lab Journals and campus newspapers every year.

Jyoti Nivas regularly holds International, National and State level Conferences, Seminars, Symposia and Workshops, many of them sponsored by the UGC.

All departments regularly conduct Workshops and Guest Lectures to expose students to experts in their field. Project Exhibitions, field trips and industrial visits are also organized to give their students practical experience and hands-on training.

Value education and religion classes are held regularly every Friday to inculcate in students familial, social, moral, ethical and spiritual values.

The Student Welfare Committee works constructively towards improving the academic performance of our weaker students. It regularly identifies the weaker students and organizes remedial classes for them. The JNC Book Bank provides textbooks and other stationery to needy students.

We provide financial aid to economically underprivileged students. Scholarships, freeships, loans, waving off of special fees are regularly provided. The beneficiaries are from all classes, cutting across caste and religion. The thrust is on equal opportunity. The college provides mid-day meals to several students and clothes to needy students especially during the festive season.

The College in its endeavor to create socially-committed and emotionally-balanced women gives due importance and impetus to extra- and co-curricular activities, through its clubs and associations. The AICUF, NSS, NCC, Rotaract and E-cell of Jyoti Nivas College comprise the Social Action Forum, which regularly carries out several Outreach Programmes to create social awareness among students, enable them to reach out to the less-privileged and do their bit to make their society a better place.
