INTRODUCTION
The Department of Psychology in Jyoti Nivas College was established in 1967.From the time of its inception the department has been growing in leaps and bounds. The comprehensive degree course equips students to pursue higher studies, research and a vocation in the field of psychology. This process is facilitated by well qualified and experienced faculty members. The faculty and student strength have significantly increased over the years.

The methodology of teaching has evolved, incorporating modern teaching aids and continuous assessment which keeps students focused and well informed. The course work involves tests, exams, assignments, projects and paper presentations. Opportunities for students inclined to seek placements in specific institutions and organizations are provided through internship and outreach programs.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programmes are designed with an objective to provide a sound theoretical foundation of the fundamentals of human behavior, get an insight on various forms of maladaptive behavior and therapies used to treat them, to enhance the self awareness of the students and to enable them to cope with the challenges in their personal and vocational lives and also to pursue research and career opportunities in the field of clinical practice, social work, management and personnel training, counseling, teaching, development of psychometric tests and geriatrics.

DISTINCT PEDAGOGY AND FEATURES
The Department has adopted a holistic approach in teaching which includes Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic modalities such as Smart Boards, Power Point Presentations, Advertisements, Movies and Documentary Screening alongside Lectures, Discussion, Debates and Webinars. Students are also involved in Games, Class Room Experiments, Psychodramas and Skill Training for Interviews, Case History and MSEs, to make learning infotainment. The department also aids students with counseling and guidance services to address psycho physiological distress. The curriculum is designed in a way to introduce a practical component, reinforce the application value of theoretical concepts and encourages students to take up projects and conduct simple research studies.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The psychology laboratory is well equipped with over 400 tests and instruments that are standardized in universities both in India and abroad. Physical facilities such as, OHP, LCD, smart board, computers and the Department library with 164 books are available for students to enrich their knowledge. The Jyoti Nivas College library has 1140 books and a digital library relevant to the subject. Notice boards are provided outside the department to display charts/posters/notices and any other student efforts. There are also facilities in the form of computers and printers, intercom and a well equipped Lab for students to learn and shine.

INTERNSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS
Every student pursuing BA/BSc/ Int BSc MSc psychology interns at either Hospitals or Industries based on their interest and passion to bridge the gap in learning and get field experience and exposure. Over years students have interned at the Spandana rehabilitation centre, St. John’s medical college hospital, Asha Niketan, Seva In Action, Bangalore, Agape mental health & research institute, Kerala, Mental health institute, Cuttack, Odisha.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Every academic year we organize a Psynapse -Psychology exhibition and Manifest-Psychology fest to encourage divergent thinking and creativity. To familiarize with the work life, field trips are organized. As an Extended learning various guest lectures, workshops, seminars and conferences are conducted regularly. The department also publishes Manodisha- the newsletter that provides the recent research trends, topics and information in the psychological realm. As a skill based training we offer 3 certification programmes namely Communication disorders and sign language, Managing learning disability, Foundations in Public mental health 1.0.
To create general awareness we organized street plays and Psychological Wellbeing camps. The Department has a centre for psychological counselling- Manasi, the Psychological Services, provides counselling and guidance services for all students no cost and reaches out to the community in and around Koramangla.

Objectives

A student graduating with psychology is expected to take papers on Basic Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology or Social Psychology. The objectives of these papers are:

Helps to understand the significance of psychology as a science and its scope in everyday life. It acquaints the students with the basic processes involved in the functioning of human beings both at the conscious and at the unconscious level and sets the foundation for future specializations in the field of psychology.

Aims to study, in a scientific manner, the processes of growth and change across the human life span. The students are oriented to various aspects of development such as physical, perceptual, motor, social and moral development from conception to death. The knowledge gained from this course serves as a good foundation to pursue academic and career opportunities in the field of child guidance, counselling, geriatrics, teaching and research.

Provides a comprehensive insight to the clinical picture and course of various psychological disorders. The course material aims to provide a sound foundation for students to pursue careers in clinical practice, counseling, social work, teaching and research.

Offered as an optional paper to students in the fifth semester, the objectives of the syllabus is to orient the students to the application of principles of psychology in work related arenas. The nature of recruitment, training, motivation, consumer behavior and other salient areas in an organizational setup is highlighted. The course equips the student to opt for various careers like teaching, research, psychometric test development, management, consultancy and social work.

An optional paper for the fifth semester, the syllabus explores various behaviours in social contexts, as well as in patterns of interpersonal relationships and group dynamics. The subject facilitates an insight into the interaction of people in various situations that generate significant thoughts, feelings and actions in a social setup.
