Activities in Genetics

The staff and students of the department are involved in various research activities such as UGC Minor Research projects and students projects as a part of their curriculum. These projects include topics ranging from classical to advanced genetics study of gene and genotype frequencies of Mendelian traits in human population, Dermatoglyphics, Bioinformatics, Gene transfer, Karyotype variations in human disorders and Behavioural Genetics etc.
A host of co-curricular activities are organized during the academic year to take learning beyond the classroom and make it a fun oriented experience. Activities include seminars, workshops, guest lectures, interclass, interdisciplinary, intercollegiate competitions and field trips which are regularly organized. Teachers make it a point to go above and beyond job decription to organise activities such as Biosymphony, Biosynergy, Wildlife week, Intercollegiate exhibitions and Inter class ZooGen activities.
Field trips are organized by the Department every year to provide the students an insight into the recent advances in research work in Genetics and also as a part of Industry - Institute collaboration. Some of the places visited are an organic farm at Manjalagiri, the Centre for Molecular Biology at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, National Drosophila Stock Centre of Mysore University, Nature camp at Kulgi, Dandeli, DNA fingerprinting centre, Madiwala, Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry college, Hebbal and National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Adugodi.
Students are encouraged to present papers in National and International conferences and also to publish their research work in the in-house research journal for students called Scientia. Guest lectures are organized for the students every semester by well known resourse persons from the industry to increase their knowledge about the subject. Journal Club - This is an initiative for the final year students to develop skills in scientific writing, motivate the students to access the journals in the library including online journals and to critique these research publications. This inculcates in the students a scientific temper, motivating them to take up research as a career.
