DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY & GENETICS    OBJECTIVES    PROGRAMMES    SYLLABUS    FACULTY PROFILE

Objectives

OBJECTIVES

  • To make the students proficient in the various aspects of animal forms like their structure, functions, inheritance and reproduction, animal diversity, environmental studies and evolution.

  • To enable the students to formulate hypotheses, gather and analyze data as a part of their minor project work.

  • To train students critical and analytical thinking, experiential learning and communicative skills.

  • To develop entrepreneurial skills as it is incorporated into their learning process like vermicomposting, apiculture and ornamental fish keeping that equips the students to become self-employed and to generate employment.

  • Team work and individual efforts are encouraged among students that make them competent for the work place challenges.

Programmes offered

Value added courses

• Entomology and Pest Management (50 Hrs)
• Medical Laboratory Technology (100 hrs)

Zoology Activities

A host of co-curricular activities are organized every academic year to make learning beyond the classroom and fun oriented experience. Activities include seminars, workshops, guest lectures, interclass, interdisciplinary and intercollegiate competitions, field trips etc.
The department also organizes a science fest every year, to coincide with the national science day. Some of them are: Mushroom culture and ornamental fish keeping, Building blocks of the Universe - finite to infinite, Workshop for school teachers on practical skills in Life sciences, Project green rescue for wild life conservation, Bioessence - Intergrated healthcare, Mind Body Matters.

OBJECTIVES

  • To understand important concepts in classical, molecular, advanced genetics and population genetics

  • To provide technical and computational skills using several teaching kits and statistical tools

  • To focus on human genetics to correlate human health and disease

  • To inculcate scientific temperament and to encourage research in emerging trends and make informed choice on various social and ethical issues that arise due to profound discoveries in Genetics

  • To increase their employability in genetic engineering, genetic counselling, clinical medical labs, embryological labs and other related fields

Programmes offered

SHORT TERM COURSE OFFERED

• Medical Laboratory Technology (100 hrs)

Activities in Genetics

The staff and students of the department are involved in various research activities such as UGC Minor Research projects and students projects as a part of their curriculum. These projects include topics ranging from classical to advanced genetics study of gene and genotype frequencies of Mendelian traits in human population, Dermatoglyphics, Bioinformatics, Gene transfer, Karyotype variations in human disorders and Behavioural Genetics etc.
A host of co-curricular activities are organized during the academic year to take learning beyond the classroom and make it a fun oriented experience. Activities include seminars, workshops, guest lectures, interclass, interdisciplinary, intercollegiate competitions and field trips which are regularly organized. Teachers make it a point to go above and beyond job decription to organise activities such as Biosymphony, Biosynergy, Wildlife week, Intercollegiate exhibitions and Inter class ZooGen activities.
Field trips are organized by the Department every year to provide the students an insight into the recent advances in research work in Genetics and also as a part of Industry - Institute collaboration. Some of the places visited are an organic farm at Manjalagiri, the Centre for Molecular Biology at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, National Drosophila Stock Centre of Mysore University, Nature camp at Kulgi, Dandeli, DNA fingerprinting centre, Madiwala, Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry college, Hebbal and National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Adugodi.
Students are encouraged to present papers in National and International conferences and also to publish their research work in the in-house research journal for students called Scientia. Guest lectures are organized for the students every semester by well known resourse persons from the industry to increase their knowledge about the subject. Journal Club - This is an initiative for the final year students to develop skills in scientific writing, motivate the students to access the journals in the library including online journals and to critique these research publications. This inculcates in the students a scientific temper, motivating them to take up research as a career.

Eco Club

We know that Earth is under dramatic environmental pressure: our globe is warming, ice caps melting, glaciers are receding, coral is dying, soil is eroding, water tables are falling, fishes are depleting, and whatever remains of our forests is shrinking. And it is up to each and every one of us to change the World for the better.
With this concern in mind we the staff and students of the Department of Zoology and Genetics took up the initiative to start an Eco-Club at Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous, Bengaluru. An Eco-Club plays an important role in creating environmental awareness amongst the future generation. It is a platform through which we obtain knowledge about the environment and contribute towards improving it. Our Eco Club is a green initiative through which the Eco Crew learn to extend their boundaries and scope of formal education to take action towards improving their immediate environment. We want to show the World that WE MEAN GREEN. More Details
