Title of the research: Development of Medical Tourism in Kerala with Special Reference to Women in Ayurveda

ABSTRACT:
Medical tourism has become a common form of vacationing, and covers a broad spectrum of medical services. Medical tourism mixes leisure, fun and relaxation together with wellness and healthcare. Exorbitant cost of healthcare and medical facilities in advanced countries, ease and affordability of international travel, favorable currency exchange rates in the global economy, rapidly improving technology and high standards of medical care in the developing countries has all contributed their share to this rapid development of medical tourism. Kerala is ideally suited for medical tourism because of its moderate weather throughout the year; advanced hospitals with world-class facilities, renowned doctors specialized in major disciplines, trained Para- medical staff and technicians, and international connectivity. The present research is an interdisciplinary subject focuses on the role and contributions women had made for the development of Ayurveda in Kerala from a historical perspective. To capture the overall scenario of the women's contribution to Ayurveda in Kerala, different sections of people in Ayurveda field were met with a specific set of questions. The entire population is sub- divided into four strata in order to get a perfect representation of the total population. These samples constituted are the housewives/ local women, academicians in the field of Ayurveda, Ayurvedic practitioners, both traditional and trained and finally the tourists, i.e., international and domestic, who came to Kerala for the purpose of curing their ailments through Ayurvedic packages. Inductive measures are used for analyzing the quantitative data statistically. The data that have collected through the questionnaires distributed to four different groups were analyzed separately with the help of statistical software package (SPSS). The findings of the research are summarized, arranged and presented in the form of a chapter. Women are playing a very good role in the promotion of Ayurveda. The reasons highlighted were better hospitality and management skills, more punctual, regularity, and also have more patience. As economically people are more stable, more freedom is given to women regarding higher learning, career and life itself, compared to earlier times. The number of women personnel are increasing in the field of Ayurveda. The main reason highlighted was better job environment compared with other schools of medicine. Very less number of complicated or emergency cases are coming to Ayurvedic practitioners. So risk factor is very less in this field. Anesthesia, surgery, etc. are not so common in Ayurvedic treatments. In Ayurveda educational institutions, the number of women students are increasing. The first Ayurveda College at government level in Kerala was established in Thiruvananthapuram in 1897. In its early stages of establishment, less number of women students were there in classes. In post- independent India, the situation had changed and the number of women students in classes increased. The number of the medical tourists, especially for Ayurvedic treatments, have been on the increase every year. The reasons highlighted are the following:
- Popularity of medical packages
- Trained professionals
- Good climate
- Standard hospitals and health resorts
- Affordable facilities

Even though, Medical Tourists, especially those who are coming for Ayurveda treatments, are facing certain problems like lack of proper infrastructure, environmental problems, especially pollution, changing climatic conditions, and so on, still, Medical Tourism offers a great opportunity for healthcare establishments in Kerala to fuel growth by tapping the potential of the international patient market. To attract foreign patients, healthcare providers may consider leveraging on both business and clinical considerations. Also, well coordinated efforts among the travel, hospitality, and healthcare trades are imperative for the sustainable growth of this business.
