MA (English)

The MA English course is structured with the intention of ensuring that the students acquire knowledge of the various areas of literature as well as independent thinking and research. The focus of the course is to provide the students with an in-depth knowledge of the subject as well as equip them with the skill required for higher academic study as well as various career opportunities available for them. The syllabus consists of five papers each semester. In addition to these five papers, the students will also write a research paper of 25 pages in the course of the third and fourth semesters of their study here.

The students are also, offered various short term courses. Right now the department gives them the option of choosing short term courses on ‘Writing Skills’ and “Academic Writing, Editing and Proof Reading Skills’.

The core papers in the semester are intended to impart to the students an in-depth knowledge if the various areas of literature. The paper on Teaching of English Language and Literature focuses on giving the students theoretical as well as practical knowledge in teaching the subject. This will give them a much required edge in their career as teachers. The research paper is intended to familiarize the students with the area of higher research and can serve as a stepping stone to Mphil and Phd. There are other opportunities of research that is available to the students during the course. They are invited to contribute original research articles to the annual literary journal, The Notebook that is edited and brought out by an editorial team selected from the second year MA English students. In addition, there are annual seminars and workshops organized to give them the students to present papers and interact with scholars and experts from various fields of literature.

The short term course on Writing Skills is intended to help students who need to improve their written language skills while the course on Academic Writing, Editing and Proof Reading Skills imparts to the students the technical knowledge required to find employment as editors and proof readers in the publishing industry. Every year the elements of the course are reviewed and changed if required to ensure that it stays up-to date and relevant as much as possible.


The course of study is organized on a semester basis consisting of 6 semesters in 3 years. The rigors of academic study at each level are balanced with a number of related activities. The vision of the department is to make it a centre of higher learning where knowledge and excellence shall reign supreme. Various activities are framed to reach the goals of the course from the first semester to the last semester.

The First semester emphasizes on the problem solving skills. To ensure their understanding of the course, sessions are taken by the staff and the ex-students to orient the new students. Also, students are given strong programming and problem solving skills by conducting various certificate courses. To develop a holistic view of education focusing on the intellectual, emotional, ethical and social aspects, value education is provided to the students of all the semesters.

The Second semester curriculum is designed in such a way that it facilitates the students to improve their academic abilities in order to fit well with the dynamic and fast growing IT industry. To meet the rapidly changing IT scenario programming in JAVA in introduced in this semester.

The subjects in the third semester provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science so that the students can excel in the present-day global situation. 15 hrs of Level I communication course and 40 hrs of personality development programme conducted in the 3rd semester enhances their soft skills and prepare them to face the corporate world.

Subjects in the fourth and fifth semesters offer a creative atmosphere in higher studies and research amongst the students. General seminars, which are conducted parallel to their regular class in the fourth semester, motivate the students towards research. These scholarly presentations help them to learn the art off public speaking and gain confidence. The best research papers are published in the students’ journal “Dhii” twice a year. In continuation to the Level I, Level II of the Communication course is also conducted in the fifth semester. This helps the students to sharpen their communication skills and to become more competent. Furthermore, guest lectures on varied topics of academic relevance helps them improve their technical skills.

The 6 months industry experience in the 6th semester shapes them as one of the outstanding computer professionals. Through out the course, students are equipped with programming, analytical ability, strong knowledge with applications of theory. This enhances their prospects for a career in various fields.


The Master of Business Administration program in Jyoti Nivas College is a two year program that offers dual specialization in the second year of curriculum. The students can choose to specialize in any two of the functional areas of Marketing, Finance, and Human Resources. The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will support their development as effective managers in a variety of organizational settings.

The pedagogy comprises a blend of theory, practice, case-based learning, simulation exercises, workshops, field work and organizational visits, which provides the student with substantial knowledge of the corporate world. Soft skills such as effective communication, team building and motivation are an integral part of the curriculum.

Students will undergo organizational internships for a period of six weeks during the Third Semester. The student can take up a project in a company within India or outside India in their area of specialization which would give them a better understanding of the practical aspects of their course. The Summer Internship Project (SIP) focuses on many latent attributes, which do not surface in the normal classroom situations, like decision making ability, inter disciplinary approach, professional judgement, skills for data handling, ability in written and oral presentation, and a sense of responsibility.

To obtain the MBA degree, the students are also expected to submit a dissertation in their area of interest in the Fourth Semester. This research study would be a culmination of their academic studies. A research proposal has to be forwarded to their Guide at least three months before the submission of the dissertation. The Dissertation will help the student to gain some research experience from their MBA program.

The MBA syllabus is revised every two years to reflect the needs of the modern global economy. The MBA course offers employability in such areas as investment and commercial banking, asset management, financial services, corporate finance, advertising, retail marketing, and compensation and benefits.

MFA restructured as M.Com (Finance & Accounting)

The MFA restructured as M.Com (Finance & Accounting) course at Jyoti Nivas College is designed for students with a Bachelor of Commerce (or equivalent) degree to undertake a more comprehensive training in finance than is possible at the undergraduate level. The degree is required to be completed in two years of full time study. Graduates of this degree will have an applied knowledge of various specialized aspects of the finance industry.

The MFA restructured as M.Com (Finance & Accounting) course is a rigorous program which consists of fundamental and advanced subjects that offers the students a chance to build a deep reservoir of finance knowledge. Projects are an important component of the MFA restructured as M.Com (Finance & Accounting) program and is required of each student. Each student is required to carry out two projects in the second year of the program. The first project which has to be undertaken in the third semester is an organization study which gives the student a fundamental understanding of the organization structure and the functioning of the various departments. This is followed by an internship project in the fourth semester which focuses on finance topics.

The Internship project requires careful analysis and planning thus making it compulsory for the student to select a project topic which is of sufficient rigor for a master’s level program. The two projects help the students to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

On successful completion of this degree, students will be able to demonstrate a broader understanding of the fundamental principles of finance and will be proficient in their understanding of the Indian financial markets. The Masters of Finance and Accounting is intended to equip students for a wide range of careers, including Retail Banking, Financial Engineering, Investment Banking, Risk Management, Insurance, Stock Broking, Corporate Treasury Management and applied research.

M.Sc (Organic Chemistry)

The course was started with the primary objective of bridging the gap between undergraduate studies and research work in the department. The course aims at equipping students with the skills and subject mastery required for research. Alongside acquiring subject related knowledge students are being trained in soft skills. The vision of the department is to establish an active research unit in the next few years.

With increasing awareness of the importance of learning process in Chemistry several activities such as Essay writing, Quiz, Lecture competition, Crossword, Poster & Model making etc. are conducted to initiate and incite creative thinking and arouse scientific curiosity in young minds.

The student’s talent is explored through short term research project under the able guidance of teachers. The industrial visit is also arranged by the department to give current collaboratingscenario of the industry with academia.
