History And Milestones

Six Young peasant girls in the little village of Tarbes in France were divinely inspired way back in 1843, to a life of contemplation and prayer, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes was thus born.

From contemplation to communion to community building - a process of sensitization to the needs of suffering humanity and an answer to the call to care for the sick and the abandoned - the Sisters responded to the challenge with generosity and commitment. Education soon became another field in which they were called to serve - schools and later, colleges, grew out to their timeless efforts. One of the many renowned educational institutions that their labour of love gave birth to was Jyoti Nivas Degree College, established in 1966. It has grown through the years, on the faith, courage and optimism of its founders.

Affiliated to Bangalore University, Jyoti Nivas was conferred with 5-star status in 1999 in the First Cycle of Accreditation by NAAC. Jyoti Nivas was one of the only ten colleges in Bangalore to be conferred with the Autonomous status by UGC in June 2004. It was conferred with the title of "College with Potential for Excellence" by UGC in 2004, an 'A' grade in 2005 in the second Cycle of Re-accreditation by NAAC and a high Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.76 in 2012 in the third Cycle of Re-accreditation by NAAC. In recognition of its merit and achievements, Jyoti Nivas was conferred with the title of 'College of Excellence' by UGC in 2014. In June 2014, we started the prestigious B.Voc degree courses (Banking & Finance and Visual Communication & Performing Arts) initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and the University Grants Commission. In June 2015, we entered the 50th year of our glorious existence.

From a humble beginning in 1966, in a small wing in a school building in Frazer Town, Bangalore, we have indeed put on wings and soared to rank among the foremost institutions in Karnataka and India and gain visibility on the educational map of India and abroad.
